Poor turfgrass growth under the canopy

poor grass growth under tree

Possible solutions include the following:

  • Replace the existing lawn with a turfgrass that tolerates shaded conditions. There are an increasing number of these cultivars becoming available that perform acceptably in shade.
  • Increase irrigation and/or fertilization under the canopy and watch how the turf responds. Continue the practice if this treatment appears to enhance turfgrowth.
  • Replace the lawn with shade tolerant ground covers, shrubs, or mulch. Click here for ground cover selection.
  • Raise the canopy by pruning it.
  • Thin the canopy by removing branches from the edge of the canopy.
