soil piled on root ball

Soil was piled on top of the root system during cultivating operations resulting in a mound down each tree row. Click to the next photo to view the result. Some nurseries in poorly drained soils use a technique similar to this to position roots above the wet soil zone. Essentially, trees are planted in these raised beds and roots end up growing primarily in the raised soil bed.
