Add mulch, but not on top of root ball

Mulch should be applied starting at the edge of the root ball out as far as you would like. A minimum mulch diameter of 8 or 10 feet helps keep mowers away. This minimizes trunk damage and prevents soil compaction from the mower close to the root ball. See detail below showing no mulch on top of the root ball.
