Opposite branches cause problems

Opposite branches can grow aggressively causing structural weakness. The two aggressive branches in the photo below cut off resources to the leader causing the leader to decline in health. I extreme cases the leader dies, initiating decay in the center of the tree. The point where the two opposite branches emerge from the trunk is a weak point and the tree can break at this point.
