Interruption of growth by living agents

canker on tree

Cankers can impair the even distribution of stress on stems and branches. The wood on either side of the canker develops rapidly in an attempt to compensate for the strength lost at the sunken canker. Structural strength can be compromised if this condition become severe enough. Trees can fail at this point on the trunk of branch.
