Fertilizer affects root density

both trees fertilized equally

The same amount of fertilizer was applied to both trees in this photograph. The tree on the left received all applied fertilizer on the soil that was to be dug with the tree. The tree on the right received the fertilizer over a larger area. Concentrating the fertilizer over the soil that will become the root ball appeared to increase amount of fine roots in the root ball. Note the enormous root growing around the edge of the root ball. Root ball of the tree on the right appears to be a better quality because roots terminate at the periphery of the root ball without deflecting.
