Good vs. poor tree placement near power lines

POOR CHOICE: Here are many examples of tree placement under and near power lines. They will provide a good understanding of why large trees should be placed more than 40 from power lines. Notice the severe pruning required to keep the trunk and branches away from the wires above.

GOOD CHOICE: These small maturing trees (silver buttonwood) is a very good choice for planting under power lines in south Florida.

GOOD CHOICE: Trees with a narrow canopy such as baldcypress can be planted closer to power lines than wide spreading trees.

POOR CHOICE: Live oak and other wide spreading trees planted too close to power lines need to be pruned regularly.

GOOD CHOICE: These small maturing trees (crapemyrtle) is a very good choice for planting under power lines in the southeastern US.

GOOD CHOICE: Plants with a narrow canopy such as some palms can be planted closer to power lines that wider spreading trees.

POOR CHOICE: These trees (redcedar) grow too tall and will grow into the power lines above.
