2003 Red Velvet
Growth Regulators Applied / Height Graph
Graph shows projected plant heights during production of the crop. Dots are plotted actual height each week. Arrows indicate when PGRs are applied with details in the weekly notes. We use the “late” graphical tracking curve and heights are from bench to height of growing tip. Heights are plotted from date of pinching to projected date of finish.
Notes
11/25
The Red Velvet are finishing nicely. The plants have a uniform shape and are not stretched. Pollen is just showing on most of the crop.
11/18
The Red Velvet are about seven days from finish and will be on time. Considering how much other crops grew this week, it was good that we applied the drench last week.
11/11
The Red Velvet grew more than 1.5 inches this week and is at 15.25 inches now. We are putting on a Bonzi drench at 1 ppm this week and expect the crop to finish just over 16 inches.
11/04
If the Red Velvet continue at this pace they will be at about 15 inches next week and we will drench them. We are waiting on the chance that they might slow down and to allow for additional bract development before the drench.
10/28
It is good to see that this crop did not slow down this week like the Freedom and Enduring Pink did. We will continue to watch to see how it finishes.
10/21
It appears the Bonzi spray did what we wanted on these Red Velvet. The plants look good and the effect looks like it will last for another week.
10/14
This is another crop that jumped this week and we will probably be putting on a drench in a couple of weeks, also. Today, we are spraying Bonzi at 5 ppm.
10/07
We are taking a little chance with this crop and not spraying it this week. We anticipate that it will continue elongating at about one inch per week for the next two to three weeks. If warm weather were predicted, we would spray it.
9/30
We are spraying the Red Velvet with the low B-Nine/ Cycocel rate (1,000 ppm each) again this week. If we were having warm weather we would have used a stronger rate, because this is our last opportunity to use a strong rate before our Oct. 1 cutoff date. If the cool temps and cloudy weather continues, the high rate could be too much. However, if it turns warm now we will have to work at getting this crop back under control. Red Velvet does not stretch late the way Freedom does, so if we got it too short now and the weather stays cool, it might be difficult to get this crop up to the desired size.
9/23
The spray last week worked nicely to control growth and keep the plants close to the curve. The shoot tips are not as tight as are those in Freedom Crop 1, which was also sprayed last week. So, we expect these plants to grow adequately this coming week and we will probably spray again next week.
9/16
Red Velvet has more vigor than the other varieties we are doing. To prevent it from getting away from us, we are applying the 1,000 ppm each B-Nine/ Cycocel tank mix. We can come back with a higher rate in one to two weeks as needed.
9/09
Red Velvet is gaining in importance because so many growers are searching for better varieties with mid-season flowering under natural days. It is a little more vigorous than Freedom, but does not stretch late like Freedom.
