Example 14

Back to Years 1-2

Before pruning

Shorten one stem so the other can grow to become the leader. Shorten the one that has the poorest branch distribution. In this example, the right hand stem only has branches on the right side. Since the branch distribution on the left stem is better and more uniform, it will be trained into the main trunk.

After pruning

The right hand stem has been shortened by 3/4s. One branch on the extreme left was also shortened. The longest low branches were shortened slightly.
