Subordination

Shortening stems that compete with the leader using a reduction cut has been called subordination. It is one of the keys to developing a nice canopy on shade trees. Subordination allows more sun light to reach the branches on the leader that are above the cut and slows growth rate on the cut stem. This combination produces a dominant leader.
