Reading stem vigor

New growth can send messages to you that you can read. If new growth on a competing stem is not very vigoous (left) then minimal pruning on this stem is needed to subordinate it. If new growth on a competing stem is about as vigorous as growth on the leader (center), then more severe cutting on the competing stem is needed. If the competing stem is more vigorous than the leader (right) then the competing stem really needs to be cut back hard.>
