Tree grates can kill if not maintained

tree with grate around it

The tree has grown well in this situation due mostly to the access the roots had to unlimited soil space several feet from this planting pit. Note that the grate has been cut away from the trunk in the past. This needs to be done again now to make room for trunk growth. It would probably be best to remove the grate entirely at this point in time. It is best never to use grates. Use other coverings on the soil around the trunk.
