Upward sweeping branches

Branches that bend upward (right photo) and then droop toward the ground are prone to failure. The forces generated by the weight at the end of the branch can cause cracks to form toward the branch base (left photo). Branches with a crack such as the one shown at left make a branch very susceptible to falling from the tree. Lighten the load by reducing the branch length.
