Trunk should be tight in the root ball

Good quality

Notice that the trunk is tight on the tree on the left - the trunk bents along its length as it is pushed.

Poor quality

The tree on the right does not bend as it is pushed indicating a root problem. There may be a kinked or circling root or the tree may not be well rooted out into the media. Photo of poor quality.
