Thinning the canopy

Thinned trees should not be overlifted by removing only lower and interior branches (left). Unfortunately, this is common in many regions of the US probably because it is easy to do and therefore very profitable. Small diameter branches are removed from the outer edge of teh canopy on appropriately thinned trees (right).
