Roots
grow quickly after planting when weather and soil conditions are suitable
for root growth. This represents root growth a few months after planting.
Note the lighter colored roots that emerged from the cut roots. Arrows
indicate where roots were cut.
Note that new roots emerged mostly from
the cuts and grew away from the trunk. Sometimes new roots grow at right
angles to the cut root and can become the source of stem girdling roots,
especially on certain maples.
