Roots in compacted soil (painted white above) often grow up toward the soil surface. Note how roots from the tree on the left appeared to follow the side of the original planting hole.
After reaching the soil surface, they grew down into deeper soil layers as soon as they met the adjacent planting hole because soil there was loose. Note the small tree (arrow) growing in the adjacent planting hole.
