Some roots on trees planted too deeply grow up toward the soil surface and proliferate in the loose soil and mulch placed over the root ball. Some of these roots can end up growing against or around the trunk as shown above. These can become stem girdling roots as the trunk and roots continue to grow. Both these roots should be severed now and the root collar excavated to look for more.
