Four large roots (white arrows) grew around the base of the trunk after the tree was installed in the landscape. Tree was planted about 10 inches too deep. The four roots proliferated in the loose soil that was placed over the root ball at planting. Roots often grow well along a small, well aerated crack that develops around the trunk on deeply planted trees. This helps cause what you see in this photograph.
