The root ball was buried with about 8 inches of soil, then mulch was applied on top of the soil. This places the top-most root in the root ball about 10 inches too deep. Although not always present on all trees, suspect deep planting when there is no visible swelling (trunk or root flare) where the trunk enters the mulch as shown above.
