Lateral roots taking a circuitous route

This is a view of the entire root system on the tree pictured in the last photo. This root emerged from the trunk (1), then turned 270 degrees (2) to cross over itself (3). The root took a circuitous route (4 and 5) following natural cracks and crevices in the clay soil. This is not unusual.
