Position the root flare above surrounding soil

The handle of a shovel (arrow) can be used to gauge appropriate planting height. Here, a shovel handle is located at the soil surface. The top of the root ball is several inches above surrounding soil. This prevents roots from being planted too deep and aids in establishment.
