Urban design to encourage tree canopy

Trees often grow poorly in urban areas unless the soil beneath and adjacent to the infrastructure can support good root growth. Root growth is THE critical factor for successful design execution! The system has to be specially designed to accommodate tree root growth. This does not happen without careful thought, planning, and execution. Occasionally, portions of cities get lucky and trees grow despite poor planning. These examples should not be used as models for future design because these are usually anomalies.

This web site is designed to help guide you through the design and species selection process. There is considerable detail included in this web site. In some cases specifications are presented but in many cases you will need to develop your own specifications based on the information contained in this web site combined with the attributes of your site.
