Keep low temporary branches in the lower 5 or 6 feet of the tree for as long as needed (More on how to produce a quality tree). The portion of the canopy that will be on the tree when it leaves the nursery (permanent nursery canopy) can be pruned into a cone or teardrop shape to encourage a leader and pleasing shape. The leader may stretch too long (center illustration) if too much is removed from around the leader.
