roots girdling tree trunk

Main roots grew around the one gallon container. These are now girdling the trunk. Circling roots also contribute to instability. This tree fell over in a strong wind because there were not enough roots growing out into landscape soil. Trees with circling roots generate feweer roots into landscape soil.
