RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES
The Environmental Horticulture Department at the University of Florida is strongly committed to preparing students to be research scientists, teachers, or a host of other professional roles in academia or industry. Graduate studies leading to the Master of Science Non-Thesis, Master of Science, and Doctor of Philosophy degrees are offered in the Environmental Horticulture Department under the Horticultural Science (HOS) Graduate Program.
Original research, reported in a thesis, is the foundation of the MS and PhD degrees. Students select thesis topics in consultation with a graduate advisor which are integrated into an ongoing research program.
Our nationally recognized faculty have research expertise
in a wide range of horticultural disciplines including plant biotechnology,
breeding and genetics, postharvest physiology, habitat restoration, turfgrass
science, arboriculture, floriculture and foliage plant production. Members
of the Graduate Faculty include department resident faculty, and faculty
at University of Florida Research and Education Centers located in Apopka,
Bradenton, Fort Lauderdale, Fort Pierce, Homestead, Milton and Quincy, Florida.
Exceptional facilities provide a wide array of opportunities for graduate students, including state-of-the-art greenhouses and laboratories as well as on-campus field research units and experiment stations throughout the state.
Assistantships are widely available through faculty grants and teaching opportunities. Tuition waivers for graduate assistants may be available. Waivers for approximately 95% of out-of-state tuition and 75% of in-state fees are available to some students on assistantships. Assistantship application forms may be obtained from the Graduate Coordinator, Department of Environmental Horticulture or the UF website.
