Dr. Zhanao Deng’s Breeding Program at the Gulf Coast Research and Education Program Center Releases Two Lantana Cultivars
Two infertile Lantana camara cultivars 'UF-1011-2' and 'UF-1013A-2A' developed by Dr. Zhanao Deng’s breeding program at the Gulf Coast Research and Education Center were recently approved for release by the IFAS Cultivar Release Committee. Dr. Deng, Professor of Environmental Horticulture, selected the two cultivars for their favorable traits of high infertility, non-invasiveness, superior plant quality, bright flower colors and excellent container and landscape performance.
‘UF‐1011‐2’ and ‘UF-1013A-2A’ were specifically developed for non‐invasiveness and excellent container and landscape performance. They are characterized by their moderate vigor, mounding growth habit, dense branching, round plant form and canopy, free flowering, bright flowers, little fruiting, few seeds, high level of female infertility, low level of pollen stainability, high level of male infertility, and lack of hybridization potential with other cultivars and other Lantana species. In trials, they have outperformed many commercial Lantana cultivars.
