The point where the first roots emerge from the trunk (called the root flare) was visible prior to planting as shown. (Top Right Photo) The flare represents the transition zone between the trunk and the roots. Soil and media should be removed to expose the top of the flare prior to planting.



The top of the root ball was positioned about an inch above the surrounding soil surface. Soil was firmly placed but not packed tightly around the root ball. No soil was placed on top of the root ball. (Middle Photo at Right)



Mulch was spread about 3 inches thick around the root ball and none was spread over the root ball. (Bottom Right Photo)
