Weekly Notes for Success Red 6.5"

9/4
Week 36 - Success is slightly more vigorous than Freedom, but late stretch is not as significant as in Freedom. We will want the height along the lower portion of the curve in late October. The Success will need little more growth regulator then Freedom in the first half of the crop.
9/11
Week 37 - We will make the first application at 2 or 3 weeks depending how they grow over the next couple of weeks.
9/18
Week 38 - Due to the growth of this crop the past week, we are spraying now with the B-Nine/Cycocel tank mix at 1,500 /1,250 ppm. The strong rates are being used to make sure we do not loose control of the crop during the warmer weather.
9/25
Week 39 - Just looking at the heights of this crop I would probably make another application similar to last week. However, looking at the new leaves and internodes, I can tell that last week's spray had more effect than is evident by the elongation. This week, we are applying the low rate of B-Nine/Cycocel at 1,000/1,000 ppm to give a little more control, but guard against having too much effect.
10/2
Week 40 - It was a good decision to make only a light spray last week. Now, we could either wait to see how they progress this week or we could make another light application. We will apply B-Nine/Cycocel at 1,000/1,000 ppm. The advantage of this is that it should hold them longer. The risk is potential problems if the weather turns cool.
10/9
Week 41 - This week's growth of the Success crop is surprising. We are now past our date for applying B-Nine/Cycocel tank mix. We could use Cycocel alone or Bonzi, which is stronger. We are spraying this crop with Bonzi at 15 ppm. Due to the size of the plants and the need to achieve good stem coverage with Bonzi, we are applying a heavy spray volume (3 qts/100 sq.ft). The 15 ppm rate is a low to medium rate for Bonzi and is appropriate for this time in the crop cycle.
10/16
Week 42 - Last week's Bonzi at 15 ppm worked well and the growing tips are still showing considerable control. So, we are not treating this crop this week.
10/23
Week 43 - The Bonzi spray two weeks ago is still holding and we do not anticipate problems keeping this crop within the desired size range.
10/30
Week 44 - The last spray is still showing considerable effect and color is just starting now. If this crop grows ½ inch this week, then it will probably make the desired height range.
11/6
Week 45 - Timing of the Success looks to be on track to finish about Dec. 4. Elongation this week did not make the ½-inch that we were looking for and it appears the crop will finish around 14 inches.
11/13
Week 46 - This crop has started moving again, but there should not be too much elongation at this stage for Success.
11/20
Week 47 - The Success appear about two weeks from finish, which should put them about on time. Heights are fine.
11/27
Week 48 - This crop appears to be finishing only about a half week later than planned and the height will be where we wanted it.
12/4
Week 49 - We applied a considerable amount of growth regulator to this Success crop and have achieved the desired height. However, the crop is more than a week from being fully developed. Compare these Success to Monet Twilight, the other late finishing variety in this project. Due to a heating problem, the temperature in this greenhouse section has been running cool for the past couple of weeks. Success has generally smaller bracts and seems to really slow down when finished cool. As can be seen in the pictures the transition bracts are even smaller then normal for Success and the true bracts that produce the display in Success have not expanded yet. So, the high temperatures in early Oct. delayed initiation and now the cool temperatures at finish have combined to significantly delay the finish time for this crop.
